Wiikwemkoong Prevention Services

Under the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, the Prevention Services program is designed and delivered to members of our Community. It is derived into two main departments, Community Support and Family Support.

The INTENT is for individuals and families to develop stronger communication and life skills.

IT IS OUR MISSION to minimize child protection service involvement by building on individual and family strengths.

ABOUT US

The staff at Wiikwemkoong Prevention Services believes it is our responsibility to ensure that our children & families maintain a wholistic lifestyle. We recognize with today’s society families create their own path. With each family’s commitment to wellness, responsible decisions are made to nurture and care for one another. Through continuous support we will assist each family in reaching their goal to a healthier lifestyle.

  • To assist families who are expecting parental challenges by providing them with the tools and skills needed.

  • To collaboratively network with resources within the community that will enhance program delivery
  • To deliver hands on healthy lifestyle activities for families

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Community support workers provide support, guidance and education THROUGH programming activities, family and community events / circles, utilizing our traditional and cultural practices.

GROUP AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING

PARENTING SKILLS & DEVELOPMENT

Our programs have been designed to build on parenting skills, through all stages, from toddlers to teens, offering practical solutions for parents as well as tips for improving communication, building positive relationships and other useful parenting skills.

Family Support

Family Support workers provide support, guidance and advocacy THROUGH home visitation, one to one sessions and/or family circles, whilst incorporating our traditional and cultural practices.

  • Assist in the development of safe and healty parenting practices
  • Assist families in the formation of specific family orientated goals and objectives
  • Provide parenting education services, mentoring role modeling and guidance
  • Provide assistance in establishing and maintaining caring relationships and effective communication between both parents and children
  • Provide crisis intervention and support families
  • Provide engagement through various methods (counseling and other support systems) to families that will assist them in relevant aspects of the case plan including:
    • Motivation
    • Family and peer relationships
    • Meditation
    • Substance misuse
    • Behavioral self-control, self-efficiency
    • Healthy lifestyle choices and life skills development
    • Provide crisis intervention and support families
