Debajehmujig Theatre Group
De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group – Mandate – De-ba-jeh-mu-jig (Storytellers in Cree and Ojibway) Theatre Group is a professional community based non-profit organization dedicated to the vitalization of the Anishnaabeg Culture, Language and Heritage, through education and the sharing of original creative expression with Native and Non-Native people.
The group was found by renowned artist, musician, director, actor, producer, filmmaker Doctor Shirley Cheechoo in 1984. It was developed to provide a forum for Aboriginal youth to see their own lives, and their own stories on stage in a way that just was not accessible in mainstream society.
De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group is one of the longest running Aboriginal Theatres in Canada, and the only Aboriginal Theatre operating on a reserve. The company has recently constructed a 125-seat theatre on Manitoulin Island, making the company the first and only Aboriginal company in Canada to own and operate their own space. Currently the company is made up of 16 full time students and employees, as well as 6 Board Members, and many volunteers.

James Simon Mishibinijima
